Game industry in Barcelona

The business world of video games in Spain is a sector at its pick.

The latest statistics available are from the 2014, with a turnover of 412.4 million euros, 31% higher than those from the 2013 and below 1,000 million estimated for 2018.

The White Paper of the Spanish Game Development 2015 stated that there are about 400 companies which revenues are distributed. A dominated by startups sector, where the 96% of companies have less than 50 employees.

Catalonia takes almost a quarter of the business. Exactly it has a 24.5% of game companies. While Madrid takes a 25%.

The prestigious magazine Wired has no doubt to highlight Barcelona as one of the most attractive cities for start-ups.

At the same time, universities develop specialized masters and postgraduate courses, taking advantage of the confluence with the leading companies in technology.

Courses such as the Interactive Digital Contents degree (UB) or the Bachelor of Interactive and Video Applications (UPF) are a proof of that.

Gamelab and Barcelona Games World

The AEVI Barcelona has decided to bring the great fair game in Spain: Barcelona Games World. An event to be held from 6 to 9 October at the Fira de Barcelona.

This fair is one of the main events of the gaming industry in Europe and brings together the largest companies in the industry. A meeting between professionals generating synergies of the entertainment industry and other fields (culture, education,…).

The Barcelona World Games is a showcase to open business opportunities and generate networking, but also to open the debate between public and private actors.

The latest edition of the fair had over 92,000 attendees and occupied 30,000 square meters in the Madrid Games Week 2015.

A challenge that Barcelona must overcome!

However, while Barcelona prepares this great fair, the new challenge is in celebration of professional congress game for Europe Gamelab 2016.

An event that will take place from June 29th to July 21st at the Hesperia Tower hotel next to the Fira de Barcelona, in l’Hospitalet de Llobregat.
