The night will open the new season for Christmas shopping.
Lights on November 27th
The Christmas lights will be turned on again this year in Barcelona. It will take place on November 27th, at the same time of the well-known event ‘Black Friday‘.
This traditional sale event comes from the USA, where it is celebrated every fourth Friday of November, on the day following Thanksgiving Day. Now, the same tradition has been adopted by the Spanish stores.
Almost 85 kilometres of lights illuminated the streets of the city last year. They will be turned on again in 2015 to spread the Christmas spirit all around the streets.
The main thoroughfares like Avinguda Diagonal and Passeig de Gràcia, as well as Plaça Catalunya, will be easily crowded, whereas Portal del Àngel will feature its traditional fir trees and Christmas messages.
The countdown for Christmas has some key moments:
The Christmas Crib in Plaça Sant Jaume, as from November 27th 2015
Fira de Santa Llucia, from November 27th to December 23rd 2015
Fira de Reis de la Gran Via, from December 18th 2015 to January 6th 2016
2015 Barcelona Shopping Night
This year’s Barcelona Shopping Night will be celebrated on December 3rd, with Shakespare as main topic and Àngel Llàcer as master of ceremonies. Last year’s topic was ‘Hollywood’s Golden Age’.
The main stage for this celebration will be Espacio Vallformosa on Passeig de Gràcia, which has been renamed as ‘The Globe Theatre Vallformosa’. People will be able to taste cava, enjoy a colourful show and listen to the best music.
The celebration in Palau Robert will not be missing, just a few metres away from Avinguda Diagonal. This spot will be the venue for a show organized by theatre troupe Parking Shakespeare, the presentation of Gaudí Awards and the TSNB II Golden Awards.
During a long period of the night, from 8pm to 1 am, participants will be able to see a special show by Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona, with diverse artists that are worth the time. Some other options are Shakespeare sonnets interpreted by Teatre Akadèmia, adaptations of Bardo de Avon in the form of dances by Estudi de Ball Neus Gallardo and incidental music by Uma Ysamat.
Gastronomy will be under the charge of Restaurant Moments, managed by Carme Ruscalleda and Raül Ballam. Mandarin Oriental Hotel will offer a ‘starry’ soap for visitors to feel more at ease. A more informal option is Van Van Market, which will feature food trucks along Passeig de Gràcia.
Participants of 2015 TBSN
The selection of Shakespeare as leivmotiv for 2015 TSNB will commemorate the 400th anniversary of the British writer’s death, and the reason why Angel Llàcer has been the selected presenter is the representation of ‘Much ado about nothing‘, directed by him.
This actor, together with some others, like Josep Maria Pou and Cristina Brondo, appear on the promotional flyers of the event, which can already be seen on the streets. The pictures have been taken by Yago Partal, a well-known photographer who has worked for the Hollywood industry.
The Shakespearean stage will reach many corners of the city of Barcelona during November and December.
Gran Teatre del Liceu will host scences of ‘Lady Macbeth‘; Reial Cercle Artístic, ‘The Little Shakespeare‘; Teatre Akadèmia, ‘Top Girls‘; and TNC, ‘Much ado about nothing‘. These performances will take place together with fragments of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘The Tempest‘, ‘Hamlet‘, ‘Measure for Measure‘, ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor‘, ‘The Taming of the Shrew‘, and ‘Antony and Cleopatra‘, along different parts of Passeig de Gràcia.
This will be a night to go shopping and enjoy, as it is evidenced in the moto of 2015 TBSN: ‘To Shop or not to Shop‘.
