The City of Girona experiences one of its best moments whenever Temps de Flors starts together with spring. During sunny and warm May, its streets and most emblematic buildings are covered with flowers and filled with pleasant smells.
As sping arrives, this great celebration in Girona also comes close. This is an event in which a traditional flowers competition called ‘Girona Temps de Flors’ fills each corner of the city with flower ornaments and an intense fragrance.
In 2015, the 60th edition of this astonishing event is taking place, an event attracting neighbours and tourists equally. Between May 9 and 17, Girona is fully decorated with flowers.
This edition´s competition will be bigger in size and longer in duration, with a total of 164 flower projects covering monuments, yards and gardens around the city.
Modern locations get mixed with historical backgrounds, commemorating sixty years of life of ‘Temps de Flors’.
2015 Temps de Flors
For Temps de Flors festival, Girona starts to get crowded with tourists from all over the world.
One day is not enough to walk around kilometres of streets with flower carpets in the old town in Girona.
The old town of the city, heart of the event, is full of life and colour until late at night, an opportunity to get lost among the 134 decorated spots for the event.
Girona becomes the Catalan capital during spring and every year there is a new special event. This one, the old Cinema Modern is opening its doors with decorations inspired in the movie Moulin Rouge.
Another referent location is the unmistakable Onyar River, dividing the city into two and covered by floating bunches of flowers during “Temps de Flors”.
Benedictine Monastery Sant Daniel is also worth knowing, where there are decorations set by participants of the Belgian festival ‘Floraliën de Gante’.
Lost in Girona
Some other traditionl locations worth visiting during of after ‘Temps de Flors’ are those in Barri Vell de Girona. It´s a place known by its historical Jewish quarter and its hanging houses above Onyar River.
Traditional Arab Baths are located just a few metres away from medieval house Sarraïnes. Well-known Sant Lluc Church (Castrum de los Manaies) is located on the way to the stunning Gothic Cathedral of Girona. These places are fully covered by flower decorations.
Girona, halfway between Barcelona and the French border, is from now on a place to walk and enjoy.
